Like everyone, I think January can be a slightly depressing month. With the excitement of Christmas been and gone – along with a good chunk of your savings! – what exactly is there to look forward to?
Well for a first, spending the majority of your work free time in complete darkness is an absolute joy, the compulsory overdose of exercise you have begrudgingly subjected yourself to is nothing short of delightful, and the cold…. oh don’t even get me started on the cold!!
The one thing I will say about our good friend Jan, is that it somehow has a way of forcing you to take stock and plan for the year ahead. Whilst I have never been one for New Years resolutions, I think its important to look back on the year past and set new goals for the year ahead.
There are a few things that I would love to achieve in the new year, however one of the items on the top of my agenda is concentrating on my wellbeing. I think many of us can fall into the trap of thinking that once we’re eating right, exercising and working hard, all is well with the world and whilst for the most part that might be true, I think our state of mind, can often be our last priority.
Having recently gone through a period where I had placed far too much focus on the less than ‘perfect’ aspects of my life, I aim to become much more aware of my mindset as well as the power I have to control it. I’ve recently become interested in the practice of Mindfulness which teaches you to live in the present and be more appreciative from all that it brings. Rather than dwelling on worries and stresses, (which can often be future related) it allows you to take pleasure in the simple things in life, much as a child does, thus maximising your experience of everyday life. I was given a handbook on Mindfulness at Christmas from someone special and I definitely want to follow it up with some classes so I can make it part of my every day life.
So whilst it may not be your typical, ‘too ambitious to ever work’, ‘life changing’, New Years Resolution, I think anything that can teach us how to live a better life is worthwhile, after all, isn’t living the most important goal of them all……
